It's quite something. On a positive note, apparently there are no worries about drinking water supplies because it rained so much last winter. Silver linings...
Watering has become a mandatory morning and evening ritual at home (10 watering cans, half grey water if possible, at home in the morning, and nearer 19 down at the allotment in the evening, to try and keep those flowers and veggies alive!). Who needs a gym?! However, what I came to say is that I went to a funeral in Bedford yesterday and noticed no less than three huge oleanders flowering prolifically away in suburban front gardens. Maybe we need to be swapping hydrangeas for Mediterranean oleanders?!
Watering is quite a ritual at the moment - I have had more conversations over the fence with my neighbour in the last month or so than in the last decade or so since they moved in. And yes, I think you're right, some stuff is definitely holding up (I'm surprised to see the fuschias doing quite so well, but there you go!).

That's the big difference with Australia, where they're scrambling to build more desalinisation plants

Yes, and roses, magnolias and camellias doing surprisingly well! Who knew?!
